Learning More About Dog Grooming
Do all dogs require grooming?
Not every dog requires grooming. Many dogs, particularly short-coated ones, do not need regular bathing, shaving, or hair trimming as long as they're not getting really dirty or muddy. Some brushing is usually enough to meet their needs.

What do I need to do when grooming my dog?
Grooming a dog can include cleaning out their ears, brushing their teeth, trimming their nails, brushing their hair, or in some cases, shaving or hair trimming as part of their grooming.
How does regular grooming contribute to the good health of my dog?
Regular grooming is important for your dog's health. Overgrown nails can affect how a dog walks and may eventually grow into their paw pad, causing pain and infection. Regular ear cleaning can help prevent ear infections. Additionally, keeping a dog clean and their hair unmatted will stop skin infections from happening below matted hair and dirty skin.
How soon should I start to groom my dog?
It is advisable to start grooming your dog at home as soon as you get it. Getting them accustomed to having their ears touched, brushing their teeth, and trimming their nails from a young age makes it easier to continue these practices as they get older.
What should I do for my puppy's first grooming?
For your puppy's first grooming, it is important to ensure that they have received a few vaccines to keep them safe. Start with basic tasks such as introducing them to clipper noise, touching their feet and ears, and getting them used to the idea of grooming before they really need a true grooming session.
How often should my dog be groomed?
The frequency of dog grooming depends on various factors such as how fast their hair grows, if they need it trimmed, or if they have a skin condition that requires medicated baths at regular intervals. However, a normal dog's nails generally need to be trimmed about every eight to ten weeks. Bathing can be as infrequent as one to two times a year, again depending on each dog's individual needs.
What dog grooming services does our vet office provide?
Our vet office provides nail trims, anal gland expressions, and ear cleanings. As for body grooming, we usually only cater to special patients who need to be sedated in order to be groomed. For regular hair trims and other grooming services, we usually refer you to a professional grooming office.
